Pick this 4-inch Empire 170 braked swivel when a wet or high-heat cart needs to steer, then park and hold on a tough plastic wheel.

A face brake presses a shoe against the wheel to stop it, holding a loaded cart on its spot in a washdown or caustic bay. The wheel is glass-filled polypropylene, a stiff reinforced plastic that handles -20 to 250°F and resists chemicals and corrosion where steel rusts and rubber breaks down. It is hard with no cushioning, so it rolls easily on smooth floors but passes shock through and can mark, and at 4 inches it carries up to 800 pounds on a roller bearing sized for manual pushing. The swivel turns on a kingpinless welded raceway with no central pin to loosen, bolts on a 4 by 4-1/2-inch top plate at a low 5-5/8-inch mount height, and wears a zinc-plated finish.
